  • Florence is incorporated by an act of the state legislature, changing the town's name from Connersville.
  • Lewis Webb surveys Big Bone Lick for Thomas Davis Carneal.
  • Abner Gaines is among six commissioners appointed to examine the Georgetown-Cincinnati Turnpike.

Kentucky

  • Louisville and Portland Canal is opened.

U.S. & World

  • President Andrew Jackson signs the Indian Removal Act, which authorizes the government to move eastern Indians to western lands, so that the U.S. can take control of all Indian lands east of the Mississippi.
  • Senator Robert Hayne of South Carolina debates Senator Daniel Webster of Massachusetts on the issue of states' rights and federal power, starting a decade of conflict over slavery.
  • The first successful women's magazine in America, Godey's Lady's Book, begins publication in Philadelphia.
