Events

Boone County

  • 1830 - Florence is established by an act of the state legislature.
  • 1831 - The Richwood Presbyterian Church is organized.
  • 1835 - The town of Landing is established.
  • 1836 - The Burlington Turnpike is established.
  • 1837 - Boone County election precincts are established.
  • 1838 - Union is incorporated.
  • 1838 - The first public school term is held in Boone County. It runs for three months.

Kentucky

  • 1830 - The Louisville and Portland Canal is opened.
  • 1832 - The first railroad in Kentucky opens. The horse-drawn cars run between Lexington and Louisville.
  • 1833 - A cholera outbreak in Lexington kills 1,500 people in less than ten days.
  • 1835 - James G. Birney of Danville forms the Kentucky Anti-Slavery Society.
  • 1836 - The legistaure establishes a common school system, creating districts within each county.
  • 1838 - Kentucky becomes the first state to permit suffrage of any kind for women; property-owning single women are given the right to vote in school board elections.

U.S. & World

  • 1830 - President Andrew Jackson signs the Indian Removal Act, which authorizes the government to move eastern Indians to western lands, so that the U.S. can take control of all Indian lands east of the Mississippi.
  • 1832 - Henry Clay fails in his Presidential election bid against Andrew Jackson.
  • 1836 - Texas settlers declare independence from Mexico. They defeat Mexican troops at the Battle of San Jacinto and pass a constitution legalizing slavery in the new republic.
