In 1960, Florence had three schools: Boone County High School, Florence Elementary School and St. Paul School- a private Catholic school. By 1969, Florence had a total of five schools nearby, having added Ockerman Middle School in 1965 and Yealey Elementary School in 1963.
Yealey Elementary School opened in 1963 and was dedicated to Almer Michael Yealey (1873-1962), long time Boone County teacher and principal. Along with being a teacher, Mr. Yealey liked to write newspaper articles about Boone County history. Mr. Yealey is buried in the Florence Cemetery, right next to the Florence Elementary School.
